“It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” – Epictetus, Discourses, Book II, ch. 17

I’ve been playing with data throughout my career, and recently decided to give the ‘SQL Expert’ certification a go. In the course of my studying I started making notes, and as I cross referenced and researched topics, they soon expanded into something much more. I then decided to add my own knowledge to the mix and publish them.

The chapters focus solely on practical knowledge and are not intended to be an academic SQL course. Hence, please excuse the assumption of a basic level of familiarity with databases in my posts. Having said that, whether you are an experienced data professional, or just use it enough to tweak some data here and there, I am confident you’ll discover things of note. The series could also prove helpful in handling those pesky ‘trick’ interview questions.

If you have any comment/suggestions, please do let me know in the comments section.

Note – Information is based on Oracle, but is generic for any database system/data warehouse appliance. I have referenced O’Hearn, Steve’s OCE Oracle Database SQL Certified Expert Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-047), Oracle and Netezza Product documentation heavily.
